Why Is It So Hard To Retain What We Learn?

By Darlene Sommer, Director of Instruction

I have been successfully teaching for over 45 years. As an award winning “Top 50 / Teacher of the Year”, I had always known something was missing from the way we teach the golf swing. I wondered why students would take the same lessons over and over. Why is it so hard for them to retain and repeat what they learned?

Several years ago, I met Michael Bentley, the inventor of the 3-D K-Vest. Michael was, at the time, one of the few experts in the golf industry on biomechanics. What I learned from Michael opened my eyes to what we as teachers had not been trained to understand. The Body! Golf instructors need to better understand the student’s physical limitations.

The K-Vest is a fantastic teaching tool which helps students get auditory and visual feedback. At the same time,it works on core strength, flexibility and muscle memory. It can help students validate what they feel, hear and see. Although I teach with the K-Vest year-round, it is my winter conditioning program incorporating the K-Vest that really shows students how to create the kind of swing that is so much easier and more efficient. It helps students RETAIN what they learn so they don’t have to keep taking the same lessons over again.

To take golf conditioning one step further, Titleist founded the “The Titleist Performance Institute” to provide players the ultimate golf learning experience. At their facility in California, players are put through a series of tests usually reserved for the best players in the world. Several years ago, TPI partnered with the K-Vest and now all the exercises and drills are designed by the leaders in Kinematic & Golf Specific Core training.

Swing techniques and style to every player is unique, like fingerprints. I establish what is best for the golfer by capturing their swing using the 3-D K-Vest. By assessing the “total picture” of their body we can more easily focus on a customized training program that will optimize the player’s performance.
